I think the engine died by oil starvation - it was way low when I checked it after the fact. I hadn't been driving the car very often as I bought an M3 back when the Aero blew a head gasket last year, so I guess I lost track of the fact that the car burns oil. I only did a dry compression test, so I don't know if it's valves or rings, but the middle two cylinders were way low. Given the noise I was hearing and the fact that the HG was just done less than a year ago, I don't think it can just be HG. Rings and bearings is my guess. I wish I had listened to my intuition to sell the car before it ticked over 200k.
I had an estimate of $1800 to put another engine in. If the car were in perfect shape otherwise, I might do it, but although it has no rust, it has paint problems in a few spots due to being egged and it has HCC and ABS issues that I wasn't able to solve.
I hadn't thought about the saabnet classifieds. Might try that, but the problem is that I live in San Diego where 9000s are a rarity.
