Relays as well. They usually become intermittent, then it gets worse.
Though I did have a machine once at work that sat for several years and when restarted, more than one relay had developed corrosion that made them not work.
But my general thought is, make sure to try the switch MULTIPLE times, it may clear up, or it may decide to work at least every now and then. That would indicate switch contact trouble; some have had these apart and report cleanable contacts inside.
One caution: Don't turn the key HARD, just take it to the stop, when you try to start it. It won't make any better contact if you twist harder, and you could break away the stop pin that the spring return action works on, and ruin the switch. That happens to these, and they're not a cheap part.
Now, Rob, here's what I would do first of all: Turn the key to RUN and make the starter turn by the bump switch or whatever you used; does the car start then?
