It's good to hear a happy ending, and a story that may encourage the many others suffering the same problem.
I agree, the controller seems to be the biggest problem with these. I myself have had great luck doing the soldering, on two '96s. On my cars frozen-up rear door latchworks also needed attention, and on one, the switchpack between front seats also had some dirty contact problems.
Lock controller is easy to find and easy to unclip and pull wiring connector off, and easy to pry open. But the black felt-cardboard panel that covers that area is pure heck to get off - - FIVE of these push-pin black plastic upholstery fasteners, and it takes a lot of force to shove the pin in to get them to release - - I tried a small allen wrench, then had better luck with a small quality jeweler-type screwdriver, only bigger, sold by Sears, that had a nice fat end that I could push hard enough on.
Then some of the pins disappeared, and the plastic prongs on a few of the fasteners broke off.
