I drive around with a wife and three kids, in Wisconsin, in January, while snowing and 28 degrees F outside. That's about the only time I can ever get any fogging to start being an issue, and jacking up the fan speed or [infrequently] touching the defrost button is all I do.

Unlike our 2001 Chev Suburban, with a 'fairly nice' ACC system - like the Saab, it waits for the engine to get up to a warmer temp before fan speed and defroster shifts to a mix position. But it does so too soon, and the fan goes too high. Sigh. When I drive it, I wish it had the Aero's ACC for the cold. Have more than one person riding with on a cold, rainy day? Or while it's snowing? Forget it. Max the fan speed, the AC is "too smart" to run below 41 F, and good luck. The cowl vents easily get jammed if parked outside in the snow ... I could go on.

Had a '98 Chrysler Town and Country, all the bells and whistles, top of the line minivan. Saab ACC beat it by a long shot.

Saab 9K: Timer defrost, the temp sensor [s] inside the plenum, watching coolant temp and adjusting the mix in spite of an override to fan speed - a great system, especially considering the vintage. The first few years [86 - 92? 93? idk ] didn't have the OFF switch or variable speed fan. Everything else [running the AC in the cold to help demist, etc, ramping up the fan speed] was very similar.

Sure, there are advantages to an 'all manual' system. The 1980 99GLi had three knobs and a two speed fan: "not quite fast enough" and "too noisy, but fast enough". Often drove with windows open, especially the rear quarter panels. Never had a 900, so no comments. But in the decades since 1986, we've always driven / owned at least one 9000, often two. Never had a flap stick, although I do change the filters every year and vacuum out any crud at the bottom. Never an actuator problem. Sure, fan motors, and a heater core now and then ... and I do clean the interior temp sensor once a year or so. But really, it can be that we drive it all winter here and the only overrides are tweaking it from 68 F to 70 F. Ok, maybe 72 F. That's it.

Pretty remarkable considering the vintage.
