Yikes! If it doesn't go away then it's probably not lifters, unless oil pressure is seriously bad and not enough to pump them up. You can hook up an oil pressure gauge temporarily to see what your pressure is like, probably not a bad idea. I would normally say to bring it right back to the shop, but not with the nightmare you've gone through....
