I learned the strategy from driving Mercedes cars for ten years. Their engines typically need six quarts of oil to maintain operating pressure, and there are typically eight quarts in the sump (E430). Some larger engines have nine. Most of the Saab owners I have met worry too much about this issue, the oil pump is very high quality in the 2.3 engine, and there is plenty of room in the sump. I have seen no evidence of foaming in the oil in nearly four years using this strategy.
I bought the car in June of 2008 with 52K miles and a sick transmission from LA freeway driving (gridlock 1,2,3, 1,2,3). I learned everything I could about the transmission from Saab and other service groups including ZF. I managed to get 15K miles out of the dying trans, had Eriksson ship a new trans out to San Diego two years ago, which I personally installed.
This new trans has been fabulous, now has 19K miles.
I never add oil to the newly installed filter. I only add five quarts directly through the filler tube. I do put a thin film of oil on the filter gasket to help it seal well. I always HAND tighten the filter.
