I assume that you are talking about what most refer to as the "center muffler", i.e. the odd-shaped suitcase-type muffler immediately in front of the rear axle, and that this is on a car with a turbo (which muffles some of the noise).
If you are planning on driving the car to the lower 48, you may want to have a better patch. You can have a muffler shop cut out the center muffler and weld in a piece of pipe and a rod to support it. Not a lot of additional noise and it was cheap, about $40 at a local hole-in-the wall shop - this lasted on my car for years before the adjoining pipes rotted out.
