As I recall from removing mine when I did the alternator, it just bolts in and doesn't have room for any adjustment. But what you might look at it is the bolts. There are bolts for the PS pump bracket AND for the alternator bracket. Some of them are a bit awkward to get to, so it would be easy to have one or two be less than tight, and that could let the bracket and pump move slightly and cause the wear you're seeing. You wouldn't hear anything. On one of my cars, the outer bottom bolt, which actually is threaded to the timing cover, had stripped out a couple of threads in the cover, so I had to get a longer bolt to do the job.
AFAIK, there is no special adjustment needed on R&R. I had a pump replaced on a road trip and I watched the tech doing the work. It was basically plug and play.
