Main question is:
When installing a fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank, which goes first------the o-ring, or the fuel pump assembly?
After owning a few 9000-s, this is my first fuel pump job.
Background:
1997 9000 CSE 150k. Conventional bulletin board wisdom says an original fuel pump with this mileage is ripe for replacement.
Friend with newer Saab had just changed at 140k, so project begins. Also to throw into the mix, slight fuel smell in rear area of car. And CEL light code which when read via code reader a few months back indicated leak in EVAP or Fuel system.
My friend made fine observation that the color of the visible part of fuel assembly was quite yellowed, unlike the new items translucent white color, to indicate it most likely was original vintage, ie, 1997.
So I had a new assembly on hand, and after getting old assembly out with locknut in good condition, began contemplation of install of new assembly, old locknut, and old o-ring.
I discovered that the pump insert only may have been replaced at some point previously, with all manner of fuel line hose and clamps in place of the more rigid, plastic factory lines.
The large o-ring was underneath the assembly between assembly and tank. Is this correct?
Also, it seems to be too large. Is this result of age? Or wrong o-ring?
The lack of proper sealing of tank would explain why I have had 1. Fuel smell and 2. A puddle of fuel in assembly area, possibly due to sloshing or even when completely filling the tank with fuel.
I don't want to reuse the o-ring if it is simply a bit too large and may never seal, even though it looks to be in good shape.
thanks for your thoughts!
