I agree with David - I replaced the blower motor and heater core when the motor starting eating speed control transistors due to excess current draw.
It's easy to measure current (Amperage) with a meter that has a high enough capacity for the blower motor - you probably need a scale that goes over 20A, as that's what the fuse rating is for the blower if I recall correctly. Most normal low-power VOMs don't go that high however, and I don't know what a "normal" reading should be (probably less than 15A), maybe someone can chime in.
