Update: test drove again, definitely not CV joints, at least not yet. Boots are intact, no clicking whatsoever on either side.
I would describe the sound as clunking, but not heavy clunking like when struts are worn out. The sound is related to speed, meaning that when going faster, the speed of the clunking is faster. The noise is worst when accelerator is slightly depressed, such as at cruising speed. It is also present when coasting with foot off of the gas pedal. It goes away--becomes indiscernable from road noise--when accelerator is depressed and engine is under load. Road bumps don't affect the sound. I can't hear it below 20mph.
Tomorrow in the day light I will do as suggested and lift the front end to test for ball joints and tie rod ends.
Not sure if this helps but I wanted to share in the event anyone has experienced similar symptoms...
