...after the original rusted/burned away. But it cost almost as much as a cheap bolt-on cat would have at the time.
Bill's idea of backing the new one up to your existing broken one may make sense if the break is only on one of the ears. They are cast iron, and that usually takes special welding techniques. So I wouldn't put big money on long life for your fix.
But I'd think you can get a split flange in the correct size. They have a shaped bevel that's meant to help press the flared pipe end up to the shaped taper on the opposing flange - - Noel's "ball and socket" concept. If you have good solid flanges and proper size bolts to pull it all together, I don't think any sealer is needed. Knock rust off mating surfaces of flared pipe and tapered flange first.
