Extra holes in head near exhaust manifold? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 09:34:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A couple of weeks back I posted a question on "how long do head gaskets last" - this is in relation to my current issue of deciding whether to fix a couple of broken exhaust studs vs. doing a head gasket job. My indy took a look and told me that I should remove the exhaust manifold and drill out/replace the broken studs (will probably break a few more by removing the manifold!), others have chimed in that a head gasket is not that bad (he thinks otherwise).
In surveying the situation, I just noticed that there is a third tapped hole (appears to also be M8 size) drilled into the head in the upper left corner near the #4 exhaust port. There is no corresponding hole in the turbo exhaust manifold (there is in the gasket), so perhaps this accommodates non-turbo manifolds. On the other hand, this hole is close enough to the manifold that an appropriately shaped piece of metal, like a wide "Y" with one tang bent down, could possibly be used to hold the manifold in place: the tang bent down would press on the head, the other two would press on the exhaust manifold.
How bad of an idea is this? If it's a good idea, any ideas on what to use for the "Y"? This car is my daily driver, so I'm not anxious to take it out of service for an extended period.
