Timing Belt Tensioner

Doing the head gasket on my 97 Aero. I got everything set up as far as timing marks and got a little ahead of myself and forgot to pull out the timing chain tensioner prior to pulling the cam sprockets off. Once i realized my mistake I pulled the tensioner to measure the extension and it was 18 mm. I figure once I pulled the cam gears the tensioner went to full extension. So now I am kinda wondering what shape my timing chain and guides are in. Crap! Prior to this mistake the timing chain showed very little "slack" from sprocket to sprocket. Maybe I can put it all back together, reset the tensioner and give it a few turns by hand and re-measure? Any thoughts on that?
Thanks
