They aren't as good as 9Ks but are pretty good cars. Both of mine have a lot of miles and I have complete service records on both. Nothing out of the ordinary in terms of service or repair needs. There are weird things about these models, but that's not unusual for Saabs--or lots of other cars. One of my best friends had a '98 900 that he ran very economically for well over 200K miles, year-round in New England. Then his daughter took it across the country.
They are certainly not the best cars Saab made but seem to be generally reliable, although they lack the solid feel of a C900, a 9K or even a 9-5. I'm not wild about the styling, but that's subjective anyway.
As for the add-ons, they do work. The stock car understeers too much, which the rear bar corrects. Poly bushings do a fine job of improving handling and steering feel. I have the poly bushes in my 9K, too, for the same reason. The front stress bar is a proven device for reducing flex in the unibody. Many FWD cars have them, especially ones that have been tweaked, because they make a difference. The 9-3 actually comes with one that could be stiffer. And the steering rack brace makes up for a design shortcoming out of Goteburg. It might look like junk to you, but it works. Drive a car with and without mods before you criticize.
These two were fairly priced, well-maintained cars. One worked on exclusively by my preferred indy. They work well, are safe for my daughters to drive and reasonable to own and repair.
