No, my units' pipe(s) to can welds were actually quite good.
My 84 C900 ex used to fail exactly there, every time.
I'm quite familiar with that sore spot.
Happily mine has/had a clean even continuous bead, presumably done as the thing was rotated. Better weld bead than I could do.
No delusions that they won't leak eventually. But plenty good enough for 'today'. When it rots out again (hopefully not for a long while).. then I'll insert a straight pipe centre can substitute..yet again.
Works fine that.. but when the in and out tubes finally rot out, on their second life.. there is little recourse but to start over with a fresh centre unit assly.
Or go to a Hot Rod shop for a bespoke entire substitute fabrication ?
Curiously the best thought out Mufflers I've had to deal with were/are the Acura(honda) ones. These have a double triangulated reinforcement gusset between can end and the inlet pipe. Clever and neat. Happily IF bought from the Acura/Honda Dealer, they give a no questions lifetime warrantee.. V nice. I've used that warantee..twice.
