Idea: buy some Grade 10.9 bolts at local hardware store Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 16 Jun 2013 06:04:15 In Reply to: Bolts and nuts looked good were...., DanaH, Sat, 15 Jun 2013 22:36:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You didn't say what country the ball joints and/or bolts came from, but based on your results one might suspect that they are inferior bolts even if labeled Grade 8.8. Try buying some replacement bolts at a local hardware store (not Home Depot or Lowe's), McMaster or Fastenall, and go up a grade to Grade 10.8; maybe try the next larger SAE size if it will fit through the hole. There have been endless reports of defective imported bolts - see current issues with the San Francisco Bay Bridge.
I just had a near disaster at my business with a 20A UL-labeled light switch that got so hot that it charred the connecting wire and almost started a fire. I took it apart to see what happened and observed that only about 1/4 of the contact points overlapped due to poor quality of the stamped metal parts (not bent properly). Guess where it was made?
