They usually either work or die with a puff of smoke - OK, I have heard that they sometimes they give some warning, but not in my experience. I always carry a spare used unit in the trunk, and had to use it one day while downtown on a sweltering hot day.
I don't know your wrenching capabilities or how much work changing auto trans fluid on a SAAB is (mine is a manual), but if you can change your own oil then this should be similar. This is definitely not the case with changing the fluid and filter on a modern VW/Audi auto trans - fill there is via a "standpipe" type arrangement on the bottom of the pan.
