Okay, so last things first: my '94 Aero is riding home on a flatbed right now because it will crank and crank and crank, but there's not even a hint that it wants to fire. It happened when I was leaving work, so I didn't have the tools to do a proper diagnosis. All I can tell at this point is that the fuel pump fuse is fine and it does not smell like fuel under the hood, even after much cranking. I cannot here the fuel pump running when I turn the key to the on position, but I could never hear it running prior to today's problem.
The car has been running fine until today, but on my way into work today, it started doing some odd things. About 10 miles into my commute, the ABS light came on. Shortly thereafter, the SID, ACC, and fuel gauge all started cutting out simultaneously. When this would happen, the fuel gauge would drop to empty and the low fuel light would come on; the ACC could not be turned on at all, and the SID went out completely (but the clock would stay on, and in fact, got brighter). Then everything would come back on together and would be normal for a few minutes. All other electrical accessories worked fine throughout.
When I got off the highway and the car was idling at a a stop light, I noticed a rattling/knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. Also, the idle seemed to be wandering up and down a little. I pulled over, popped the hood and the sound seemed to be coming from the alternator. Also, the noise changed somewhat in intensity as the SID, ACC, and fuel gauge cut out (louder when those things weren't working, quieter when they were). So I assumed the problems I experienced on my morning commute were related to the alternator and that my alternator was on the way out. I shut off the car and went into work. Some 3 or 4 hours later, I went out to start the car to make sure I wasn't going to get stranded at work tonight by a dead battery or something and it won't start. It cranks as fast as it ever has (maybe even a touch faster?), but that's it. The fuel gauge, SID, and ACC all come on like they're supposed to. But I did notice that the starter runs for maybe an extra half-second after I release the key. Not sure if it did that before, as I've never had a no-start problem before.
When I get home tonight, I'll check for fuel and spark by cracking the fuel line at the rail and, if necessary, spraying a little starter fluid into the intake. But even assuming I can quickly narrow it down to no fuel or no spark, I wonder if the problems I was experiencing during my morning drive are at the root of the no-start problem. Has anyone experienced these symptoms before and, if so, any pointers on what I should be looking for? I've looked for loose/dirty grounds, but didn't see anything obvious.
Thanks!
