I got the alt out the top. There has to be a better way to get those allen bolts out. I think I may take a hole saw to the inner fender before I put it back in. Very slow going with an 8 mm allen wrench. I didn't have enough room to get an allen socket on them or it would be quick and painless. I expect it will be a stone bitch to get that serp belt back on. I took the idler pulley off as I need to replace it. It was noisy when I spun it so it's gotta go. Needs a new belt, too. The alt is a 110A unit. The brushes look OK. One is narrower than the other and the inner one has made a pretty good groove. The outer brush doesn't seem to have worn as much. Bad news is the bearings are a little noisy. The 93 alt looks OK, minor grooves in the comm and I would probably change the VR while it's out. It's a 115A unit with an external fan. It looks like it will bolt in so I may, ahhh....., what's the opposite of update?
Here's the numbers if anyone cares:
97 alt: Bosch 0 123 505 017
VR 1 197 311 527
93 alt: Bosch 0 120 468 045
VR:1 197 311 022
