I cured this serious and persistent problem on my 1815 farmhouse in northern New England by ripping off the shingles and replacing them with metal roofing. I took the opportunity to lay down some extra insulation under the metal at the same time. This project was not without incident. Another woman friend and I did it by ourselves. I managed to slip off the roof. Eighteen feet above my cement patio, I could have been badly hurt if I had not rented scaffolding. I landed on the top of the scaffolding. Maureen peed her pants watching me slide down the new metal. I had not tied the scaffolding to the building and she watched the scaffolding swing out and back like a pendulum. On the other side of the roof we were careful to fasten the scaffolding to the house. It turned out be quite a job for a couple of old ladies, but it solved the ice dam issue once and for all.
