I've been using a group 41 battery in my car for six years. When I bought the first one in 2008,
I purchased it from Pep Boys. It was a Bosch battery made by Johnson Controls with an eight year warranty, and free exhasnge for the first three years. At that time Bosch switched OEMs, and the Johnson barttery fit fine, and the new Exide battery did not.. Since then, I'm on my third battery (second two were free having failed internally), and the latest Exide fits the tray in a 1996 just fine.
Find a 1996 battery tray, I agree that the group 34 is undersized for this engine.
