Not all 41s fit all '96 trays Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Fri, 14 Mar 2014 18:53:13 In Reply to: group 41 fits fine in 1996 tray, Ken Fisher, Fri, 14 Mar 2014 10:36:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There could be variability in either the length of batteries of a given group size at the base or the length of the '96 trays or both.
My tray measured between the flanges is 10-5/8" long (1996 CS). A group 41 is nominally 11-9/16" long. I wouldn't expect a group 41 to fit my tray, but I've never tried a group 41.
As for relative size and strength: A group 41 is nominally 11-9/16 x 6-7/8 x 6-7/8 = 546.51 cubic inches. A group 34R is nominally 10-1/4 x 6-13/16 x 7-7/8 = 549.90 cubic inches. Neither battery is going to last long in a 9000 ordinarily. The 78DT's nominal dimensions amount to 591.25 cubic inches. However, weight is a more reliable indicator than volume; lighter batteries have less lead and tend to go bad faster. The warranty is an even better indicator. 3 years nonprorated for me, please.
If I could choose between a bigger battery and a 34R with a cooling solution then I'd go with the latter.
