Thanks for the info. I'll find out if the connector is black or stainless when it arrives today.
I'm getting 2,000 ohms betweens pins 67 and 41 at the ECU harness, which is out of the normal 485-595 ohm range specified in the Trionic manual. I don't know if the strength of the magnet affects the electrical resistance. The cable feels flimsy at the connector. My guess is that after 20 years and 220K miles this CPS has had enough.
I removed the old connector to inspect it for metal bits that might affect its operation. There were no metal bits or swarf. The stainless part has what looks like a thin oil varnish over the surface that resides inside the engine block. The yellowish coating did not respond to contact cleaner or mineral spirits.
