I am now convinced this is all mishmash and there are far fewer differentiations than one would imagine. The EPA link I got these engine numbers shows "900" and "900 convertible" as the same engine family, and since all 1990 convertibles were turbos, they must not distinguish between "900" and "900 turbo." Also, the CARB EO document below exempts "900" and "900S" but there is no EO for "900 turbo" at all... so I think CARB doesn't distinguish between turbo and non, either. Finally, the EPA certification data for 1991 lumps 2.3l 9000 and 2.1l 900 into the same engine family, and 2.3 and 2.0l (presumably turbo?) into the same.
That is stunning, because it sure seems like MSA2.3V5FTB2 describes ALL turbo engines from 1991 - 2.0l, 2.3l, distributor, DI/APC, EGR or no, manual or auto. I need to re-learn some stuff, but I think this means smogging a T5 c900 as a 1991 9000T is *real easy* - assuming the line between T5 and DI/APC is sufficiently blurry. ;)
