Apply the brakes and look at the brake lights from a distance of 2-3 car lengths.
All four elevated brake light bulbs should be on and equally bright. All four bulbs should be Sylvania 2825 or 2825LL or equal (consuming 5 watts each and producing 5 candle power). Do not use other bulbs such as the #168 or #194.
Likewise the lower brake light bulbs should be on and equally bright. The outer bulbs should be Sylvania 7528 or 7528LL or equal which has two filaments, 5 watts and 21 watts. The brighter 21 watt filaments must be on when brakes are applied and off when brakes are not applied.
A bulb that is the correct spec but doesn't burn brightly is either installed backward (applies to lower bulbs only) or has poor electrical flow possibly indicating a weak ground connection.
