Could This be Goodbye

After replaces both front bearings (the left 1 was shot) all front suspension bushings, set of Firestones, 4 wheel alignment and the flexible muffler, I'm now hearing this whining/growling sound coming from the passenger side, sounds horrible. Sounds like it's coming from the trans. I also need to replace the crank position sensor. As much as I love this car I'm seriously thinking of throwing in the towel. I've had it since I pick it up off the lot in 1996 with 6 miles on the odometer. I've had a Saab in my position since I purchased a new 83 900T in 83.
Before I do something I'll regret, can I replace the output shaft bearing without removing the transmission?
