That BQE is definitely a road to stay away from!
When my transmission failed Eriksson said they had a rebuilt one they could let me have for $1500. (At that time they were getting out of supporting pre-GM Saabs.) I don't think it included shipping but I could conceivably have driven up there to get it. Probably should have gone for it, but the car was (and is) rusty with over 300,000 miles and it didn't seem worth putting that kind of money into it. In fact I had only paid $1500 for the whole car. So through a post from another Saabnet user I found a local junkyard was selling a used trans from a 1995 9000 with a claimed 95K miles for $175. So I took a chance, and now about 5 years later it still works fine.
I'd say if your 9000 is otherwise in good shape with 225K miles it may well be worth installing the rebuilt transmission. My 9000 has no other serious problems and is approaching 365,000 miles. (Also, look at what even old used cars are selling for these days!) My main concern would be the transmission being for a V6 model, I wonder what the differences are and how it would be adapted to work with the turbo 4? Eriksson knows what they're doing though and has a great reputation. Then again, if Goldwing can provide a tested and guaranteed transmission for $900 that's pretty tempting.
I bought governor seals from Eriksson back when I needed them. Maybe they have them now? Whether that would help your situation with reverse gear I have no idea. Might be worth a try, certainly replacing those seals is a lot cheaper and easier than replacing the transmission! The symptom I experienced with bad seals was erratic automatic shifting, but the trans could be shifted OK manually and reverse gear was not affected. Seals may be available from European sources since the 4HP18 transmission was used in a lot more cars there.
