CV Axle Replacement - Inner Tripod Bearing too large Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sat, 30 Sep 2023 21:21:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Car is a 1994 SAAB 9000 Aero with Manual Transmission - car has 208,000 miles
Torn CV boot was replaced by a shop, somehow the outer band came off and I found a huge mess of grease when I changed from winter to summer tires. Took it back to the shop and they cleaned it up, put new grease in the boot. I watched them do this and they used grease out of a bucket that appeared to be reddish color - probably not the black moly grease that you are supposed to use. In any case, the CV joint is now making noise so I decided, based on the high mileage on the car, to just buy a replacement GSP brand Chinese axle - you get a new inner driver and save the effort of separating the outer CV joint from the axle.
Old axle out, cleaned up the inner drive cup, put about 6 oz. of Mobil 1 synthetic grease in it. Put the outer axle through the bearing and was next going to put the inner tripod in the cup - BUT IT WON'T FIT IN! The rollers on the new tripod are about 1-7/16" in diameter vs. the old one is about 1-5/16" diameter - so it won't fit into the cutout portion of the driver cup. Oh, so this is what I've read about the smaller inner drivers? Seems quite odd to have this on an Aero, SAAB's most powerful car in 1994.
Not sure what to do at this point, car is disassembled and it's the weekend. Maybe move the old inner tripod to the new axle - if they are compatible, as I've read that replacement axles may have a smaller diameter? Try to find another complete axle, but using different search criteria, i.e. for a NA manual car instead of a turbo? None of the listings that I have found list the diameter of the inner tripod joint rollers. Or maybe just bite the bullet and buy just the outer CV joint, struggle to separate the old one from the axle, and keep using the existing inner tripod?
If anyone has a part number that will work for this, I'm happy to get that information.
