Cracks in front control arms Posted by Nixter [Email] (#680) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nixter) on Tue, 19 Dec 2023 09:41:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had a set of new Moog control arms break after about a year on a 1996 CSE. This after hearing the telltale 'pop' while backing out of a parking spot. Thankfully this broke at low speed in a parking lot and I was able to get towed home. At the time I was in the process of fixing up my now-1997 CS and poached the original control arms from it to get the CSE back on the road with only a torn CV boot as the damage. I again purchased aftermarket brand name control arms for the CS and put it on the road this February. Having put the car up on jackstands for other work, I see cracks forming in the control arms in the same area.
Looking back at the photos I took, the originals are made of a thicker metal and in hindsight, I should have gone with those (which I now will). Has anyone else seen this on their 9K's? The car is a summer daily driver with the occasional 'spirited' driving Saabs are known for. This cracking is concerning from a safety standpoint. I know 900's were prone to this, but the 9000's as well? I suppose this serves as a warning to go with the OEM-level control arms as this thinner metal is prone to failure.
