I've got a '95 Saab 9000 Aero that appears to have a recurring problem. I'd love to get to the bottom of it as I love the car but I'm getting pretty unhappy about the fact that this has happened twice now. Any advice or thoughts would be welcome.
I got the a couple years ago and it drove great for the first 3-4 months. Then one day when accelerating onto the highway, I would say with more power than normal but not maximum, I heard a small bang and then a whooshing sound. All boost dropped and the car, while driveable, definitely wasn't the same. I put it away for the winter and dealt with it the following year (this year).
Took it to the local Saab guy and he replaced bolts on the exhaust manifold. He also said the exhaust was a clogged mess - fiberglass sorts of stuff on the inside. I bought a new exhaust (hard to find and costly) and he replaced the whole thing from the cat back. I did notice that it seemed to have less boost and that at higher RPMs I'd get a bit of the "whoosh" sound and the power would drop.
We've had a warm winter here so I kept the car for longer and drove it today. Accelerating onto the highway the same thing happened again! Whooshing sound, no boost, and I can see the exhaust now emerging from the middle of the pipe at one of the joints and not the muffler. The whole thing looks clogged again.
I'm not sure what to do. It was hard to find the exhaust to replace the old one last time and even if I do find one I don't want to keep replacing them or to never be able to apply power to the car. Any idea what's happening? Could it have been a non-Aero exhaust that can't take the pressure or could it be something else? I love the car but I'm going broke maintaining it.
