So, here we are 20 years later and I was looking for ideas on how to fix the rattling coming from the center roof area inside the car on my newly acquired Aero (my second Aero and third 9000). First I tried out the SAAB TSB of wrapping the sunroof relay and motor with some felt tape (I used felt stick-on sliders for chair legs) which improved things a bit but didn't fix the loudest rattling.
The noise was reproducible with the car parked by banging on the roof - you could hear something hard rattling against the roof. I lowered the right front corner of the sunroof by removing the interior clamping trim, the upper console shell, the grab handle and the sun visor enough to peer into the roof area. I saw that the front sunroof cable mechanism tube was close to the roof, and seemed to be responsible for the rattle. I slit some leftover coolant expansion tank rubber hose, wrapped it around the tubes, tucked some between the tubes and the bracket under them, and made sure that this would stay in place by clamping with some zip ties. This fixed the problem, and the car is now much more enjoyable to drive!
