Dear mfnjr.
You can try turning the engine over until you have it at Top Dead Center (TDC) using the timing marks on the flywheel . This means #1 AND #4 cylinders are BOTH AT TDC .To determine which cylinder is on its firing stroke remove the sparkplugs from #1 & #4 (Actually you would find it easier to turn the engine over by hand with all 4 plugs removed anyway while looking for TDC ).Using a piece of tight fitting hose try to blow into cyl 1 and cyl 4 . The one you cannot blow air into is on its firing stroke (both intake and exhaust valves are closed) . Take off the distributor cap and see which spark plug lead lines up with the tip of the rotor and run that lead to the cyl. that you have proven is on its firing stroke . The firing order is 1-3-4-2 . Notice the direction of rotation of the distb. rotor and connect the other leads appropriately .
