Yes the cracking of cross drilled rotors has always been a concern but I have 100K miles on my cross drilled rotors & they are rust free & haven't warped like the normal vented ones did on my 87 SPG.
Pretty much all motorcycles, mountain bikes (who have disc brakes), race cars as well as many exotic sports car (ie 911T) use cross drilled rotors.
Decreasing the braking serfice is very minimal & the benifits definantly outweigh the losses. Dissipate heat quicker & reduces dust on pads which will reduce stopping distance by up to 20%. X-drilled & slotted do the same thing, it's just different ways of doing it.
The brakes on my old 87 SPG aren't very strong, especially by todays standards & I did notice an improvement with the roitors added, especially on the mountain roads :o)
