Changing the thermostat??

A couple of days ago my check engine light came on. I noticed then, and the following cold afternoon, that my engine was not heating up. Okay, I got 107K and it's going into winter, typical time to need a new thermostat. I purchased one today, and thought, " oh a cheap part, must be burried under hours of labor".
I'm used to nice easy, right there on the top, kind of thermostats. I looked into it today and didn't have enough time to do more than one of those easy T-stats. I spent most of an hour unsuccessfully trying to remove the fairing from under the radiator so I could neatly drain off some coolant before taking out the stat. That going to be another problem entirely. But as I looked at the housing I have to wonder, Can I get that off without removing my intake manifold? Is this job as easy as it should be or is it rediculously complexed? What are the tricks, any shortcuts?
The car is a '95 9000 2.3L (aren't they all) low boost (if it makes a difference).
