There is no need to remove the intake manifold. Pull off the air hose to the manifold to get more room. I take twine and tie back any hoses in the area to keep them out of my way. Depending on the year, you have to remove a bracket from the top of the thermostat housing to get access to the housing bolts. The intake manifold IS in the way if you just want to slap a nutdriver on it. However, with a few extensions and a wobble extension on your socket, it can be done. Just take your time. Taking two minutes to remove a bolt because it requires some stretching, and maybe turning the ratchet only a few degrees is still better than 45 minutes removing a manifold.
Here is an easy trick for draining the cooling system down effortlessly: Go to the autoparts store and buy an aftermarket windshield washer pump. I got one for $12 plus 5 feet of hose. Wire a red and a black alligator clip onto the wires. Thread the input hose down into the coolant reservoir, the output into a nice clean container, and put the clips onto any available power (battery?) and ground. Once you've pumped the reservoir dry, undo the clamp at the base and pull the hose off. Now thread the input hose to your pump into that hose and let her rip. After you've pumped out about 1/2 to 3/4 gallon of antifreeze, the level will be below the thermostat.
Definately buy a Saab Thermostat. I recommend an 82 degree C thermostat if your car is running even a little warm. It makes a big difference.
Good luck!
