You got a great deal on that '95, even with a bad heater core.
A new core goes for around $230 from Saab - you may be able
to get it from someone like Sobstory for as much as 30% cheaper.
There are some nice detailed instructions on Quasi's or the
Townshend site for doing the job. I've done it myself, but I sort
of 'cheated' because the engine was out of the car, at the time.
Anyway, you'll get access by taking off the 'aquarium' cover
and the front cardboard panel that's held on to the firewall with
a few screws. You might want to consider replacing the heater
blower motor while you're in there. It's probably good for 120-30k
miles, but you'll be right there and it'll be a relief knowing that you
won't have to worry about it for a long while. I think it's listed as
a 2 or 3 hour job, but if you've never done it before it could be an
all day job, and it's sort of an awkward place to get to - you're
always bent/contorted into weird angles - unless you stand
in an empty engine compartment. If you have any back problems,
you might want to consider subbing the job out! By the way,
Bars Leak, besides being an excellent conditioner for you
water pump seals, actually will cure most heater core problems.
I'd try that first.
