I had an '87 Renault(no giggling!) GTA from new. Once, my garage put in an aftermarket O2 sensor. It was faulty and behaved exactly as you described: very hot to the point where I could "smell the heat" from the cat and loss of power at any time(on the plus side, I got really good gas mileage from the lean running but the car was simply unsafe since I never knew when the power would leave me) also it happened fairly frequently(loss of power, high heat with the bad sensor). For Renaults(hey, I had 'em for 19 years...I'm starting my 2nd year is Saabs), the Rule of Thumb was ~15,00 miles between new O2 sensors. It was also a nice way to boost performance. BTW, revving the motor when it got to the point of quitting due to lack of fuel only made it hotter + it wasn't any more powerful.
...'course, I've put ~22k miles on my Saab and I haven't changed the O2 sensor nor do I know when the previous owner changed it.
Hope this helps...just my two Euros,
Joe Krepps
