I had a coolant bypass hose (clogged) rupture immediately after arriving at our local ski hill last year,,,It was a 8-14%climb for 22km. MY cylinderhead temp I think was boardering 350 Celcius and the ambient temp was -10C,,,no coolant left in the car as a buffer (the temps rose significantly when the coolant left;(. I replaced the hose the next day, filled it with coolant and all was well, no gasket problem at all. Anyway, the head gasket went several weeks ago for the first time, so I went to get the head done(p&p, valves, everything) and they were surprised that the surface was FLAT and only needed a little clean-up. No cracks either. This overheating episode was the only experience I had, but the previous owwner had thermostat problems at least a few times with the coolant temps in the red, w/o any problems. tough head I think!
I didn't get the valve guides done, as they thought they were 'alright'...I still have a little oil burning after several minutes of idling after warm startup,,,booo. Oh well, can't get all.
