Been watching the talk about the mystery cap. I see it is figured out now. May I pass this on? 23 years ago while working in an after market car accessory shop we started getting noise complaints after placing Audiovox car radios in cars which the local dealer had us install on since we were cheaper than the factory. It was a popping machine gun noise and not the whine of an alternator, so it was ignition sourced. Upon Audiovox suggestion I made a dummy ant. plug to isolate the radio from outside noise sources and the noise wasn't there so I knew it was being radiated in via the ant. jack. Everyone was calling the Audovox factory guys and we were all stumped. In utter desperation I looked everywhere, even inside the distributor cap. The factory had smeared a wad of grease around the inside of the cap around all of the electrodes. Wiped it out, cleaned the carbonized crap which had developed from the spark jumping through the grease on the way out and no noise. Never seen anyother cap with it in, but it is a gap which developes an arc and there is no shielding in the cap so it will radiate, so maybe this will help someone sometime.
