...(having owned three), I'd have to suggest the 9-3, based solely on the auto-transaxle. The 9K slushbox is known to be problematic at higher mileage (~100k), and fixes are expensive. I would guess that modern 9-3 auto trannies are solid, as they should be Asian-Warner units like the 9-5
--although I don't know for sure.
If your wife could become accustomed to a 5-speed, I'd go for the 9K, based on the utility and price. They are fine cars, though admittedly dated and quirky at times. It's successor, the 9-5, appears to be well-thought-out and reliable--and although it doesn't offer a hatchback design, it does have a station-wagon offering which is rather nice. Personally, I'd have to go with the wagon (Aero, of course) if I were to buy a new car, although the stigma of wading this far into the realm of overt domesticity might tarnish my image. :-)
