My first 9000 (1991) I drove for over 100,000 miles with no problems with the auto trans. My latest 9000 (1996), I had to replace the auto trans at 36,000 miles (actually, SAAB replaced it under warranty). And I'm not hard on my cars. So, based on my own experience, and that of others that I've read about here and elsewhere, the 9000 auto box is a big question mark.
SAAB went to the Aisen-Warner automatic transmission in the 900 series in 1994, with the onset of the "new generation" 900. These units are extremely hardy and reliable.
If you don't want to spring for the cost of a new 9-3, why not get a used 9-3 or late model 900 (stay away from years 1994-95)? They have 4 doors, and will probably cost less on upkeep than a 9000.
