First off, old spark plugs CAN cause a check engine light. The Check Engine light comes on when the engine control detects just about anything wrong, from a bad O2 sensor to a vacuum leak to plugs misfiring.
I'm pretty sure you can extract the codes without an ISAT instrument. The Townsend site (http://www.townsendimports.com) isn't working this morning, but check in there for info. My FI manuals are not accessable right now.
