...I won't pitch a hissy fit on this board unless you call my Aero a Volvo.
> When I posted that a while back about not liking the SZ50's, it was mainly because of the fact that they provide little traction when it gets cold and wet and they cost a fortune (almost $900).
Does "cold and wet" mean freezing conditions? I drive in near-freezing wet weather here on occasion during the winter and don't find the tires any less competent than in summer. I can't speculate on ice and snow as we get these conditions once every 10 years or so, and I stay off the road when it happens. People around here have no concept how to drive on ice.
Also, in the size appropriate for a 9K they don't cost $900--actually $580 per set via mail order for the EP's.
The only reason I promote these tires is for the same reason I promote synthetic oil and Bar's Leaks: Because I find they are exceptional products and I want to pass the experience on to others. I couldn't care less what everyone ultimately installs on or uses in their cars, but passing info on to others is what this forum is all about. It is my duty as a Saab owner to pass along tidings of great joy. However, you can lead a horse to water....
I do recognize their limitations in ice and snow, as reported by others, and I do make mention of this any time I bring up the subject. But your experience with the Probe doesn't jibe with mine in my '91 9KT or my '95 Aero. In cool weather I've never noticed a decrease in performance, but it rarely falls below 25°F here and I rarely drive in wet conditions <40°F.
However if you managed to wear off 50% of the tread in 8k miles, you either had an alignment problem or drove much more aggressively that I do.
