The original Saab evaporator with the lateral air tunnel is one of the best AC kits ever produced. A generic unit will never be as efficient as the original. It would be wise to find one and restore it.
My 1975 99LE has this kit since new. In the spring of 2003, I have converted the system to R134a - the newer type of refrigerant.
A new expansion valve has been fitted to the evaprator.
In the engine bay, I fitted a 7 piston comressor from a 9000. It is designated "7H15", and the same unit from the R12 era is "709". This is the most reliable AC compressor ever for passenger cars. I have fabricated a parallel type condensor, and done a lot with the fan system. Yhe main fan is from a C900 turbo, with a 2 speed motor from a 9000. A thin pusher fan is located between the radiator set and the grill, at the driver's side , coo ling the part which the main fan doesn't. The secondary fan is connected to the low speed of the main fan, and the high speed works very seldom.
Driving in town or out, in the desert or the sea shore, the cabin is always cool, even when the temperature outside is 115 degrees F, and relative humis is 85%. The engine doesn't overheat, and driving is a pleasure.
I will take som photos of the set, and will upload them in the nxt few days.
