Need advice/part on '74 water pump (long) Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] (#1463) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gary Stottler) on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 17:39:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
All, this is a duplicate of an email I sent to the Saab 99 list, but I'm not sure if everyone is over there. Sorry it's so long:
Boy, just when I think I know what I'm doing..... I was at Ed Lorenz' place this weekend as I offered to give him a hand with replacing the water pump in his '74 99 as it finally started leaking after 38 years and 187,000 miles. The good news is that the aluminum cover came off with barely a whimper and was very clean. There is some evidence that the leak was around the cover and not at the water seal, but I figured that once the cover was off, I hate to put it back together without new seals. I had forgotten that the "Type I" pump ('73-mid '75) uses a bolt to hold on the impeller rather than the nut, so the later-type pump puller won't work. With a dash of advice from John Moss, we were able to MacGiver an adaptor onto the slide hammer (OK for Type I pumps only!) and pull the pump out without much trouble. However, the brass bearing/seal cage remained in the block (common I guess) and this is where the trouble started. We just put a large nut on the end of the slide hammer and caught the edge of the nut under the edge of the brass cage to tap it out. The cage came out OK, but the nut deformed/bent the bottom of the cage a bit. Here's a picture:

Problem is, the stop against which the bearing seats is pushed up by this dent, so the bearing won't seat properly in the bottom of the cage. I tried to straighten it, but didn't have much success. Since the brass cage locates the bearing, it's critical that it be right so that the bearing is perfectly perpendicular to the shaft and also so that the impeller is at the right height.
Does anybody have a brass cage for a '73-'75 pump that you'd be willing to part with? Or, if not, can anybody give me an accurate measurement with a machinist's depth gage from the top surface of the cage to the bearing seat at the bottom? If I have a good measurement, I think I can get my machinist to repair the part we have by just milling the bearing seat at the right depth.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
