I was looking through brochures and the 1977 model year brochure (burgundy cover with ''SAAB'' metal logo) section on the GLE states that the "outside mirrors are electronically controlled". All pictures in the 77 brochure show black painted flag style mirror housings with chromed bases. The 76 brochure shows the older style ball and socket chrome mirrors.

Chroming stuff in the 70s or whenever this mirror housing was chromed must have been much cheaper then.
