I talked to John Moss about this once, and he indicated that Saab had issued an SI recommending the use of 90W gear oil as Doug recommended. I would be interested to see if the Amsoil product turns out to be "fluid", because I think that's an important property - it needs to be able to flow around the rack and bushings and lubricate the ball bearings in the pinion.
The 90W is easy to put in with the rack in the car - just use a pump oil can and remove the clamp holding the boot to the tie rod. Insert the spout into the boot along side the tie rod and squirt.
Back to the original question, I think the plastic bushings mostly tend to fail when the boots fail and the oil/grease runs out. Several folks seem to have made bronze ones that have worked, you just need to come up with a way to secure it in the tube in place of the three little tabs on the plastic bushing.
If you get some of the Amsoil grease, let us know what it looks like!
