My 78EMS had a copper sleeve installed that was in the air bellows, and allowed coolant to run through it.

It was a ring w/ two connections that went through the side of the bellows, right near the throttle body, for coolant hoses ran from the heater hose area. The ring was then installed in the end of the throttle body, under the bellows.

At the time, i was having cooling issues, and suspected a leak, so I removed all that stuff and converted it to a "normal" set up from my parts car.
This included changing the Air intake bellows, and a few heater hoses, and taking that sleeve out, as i recall.

I still have those parts around, and as far as i can tell, it was factory, or dealer installed.
Never have seen another one though.

does that sound like what you have goin?
