Steve,

It sounds like you have a great car (we would love to see some pictures!). I am not sure where you are located in California, but one premier resource is J&B Imports in Orange, CA who has been working on Saabs for many years. In terms of purely parts sources, I think that the Saab 99 is beyond "one stop shopping", and one must rely on a combination of sources with some searching required for parts. Aside from this Bulletin Board, there is a good email list available at:

http://jasonsimonds.com/mailman/listinfo/saab99_jasonsimonds.com

With regard to your specific problem, I have often seen the Saab 99 distributor advance mechanisms "stick" which requires disassembling the distributor and cleaning and lubricating all the parts. This can cause both the vacuum advance and the centrifugal advance to stop working. The good news is that this "overhaul" requires no parts and can be done by the moderately-skilled do-it-yourself owner. I would think that a good import repair shop or a Bosch Authorized shop should also be able to help.

With regard to the smog test that you must pass, can you tell us more about that? Also, what is the emission system on your car - Does it have the "Lambda" system with Oxygen sensor and catalytic converter, or does it have EGR and AIR systems? If you would like to contact me off-line I can give you more information.

In any event, I hope that we can help you - I fear that a Saab 99 donated to charity will likely get turned into scrap, which none of us want to see!

Best Regards,

Gary Stottler
